Documentation / Getting started
Switching from another program
Do you use Aldfaer, Gramps, MyHeritage, Ancestry or another family tree program now? You bring your tree along with one file. This page shows how to make it in each program.
How it works
- 1Make a file in your current program
Usually a GEDCOM file (.ged). See below for each program. - 2Read it in with Stambeam
Choose File, Import. You see what is in it first; Stambeam makes a copy beforehand. Step by step in “Moving your tree to Stambeam”. - 3Carry on where you were
Data Stambeam does not know is kept and goes along again when you export.
From Aldfaer
In Aldfaer you make a GEDCOM file of the open tree through the Bestand (File) menu (export GEDCOM). With Instellingen (Settings) you choose which data goes along.
- Open the tree in Aldfaer.
- In the Bestand menu, choose the GEDCOM export.
- Enter a file name; Aldfaer adds .ged itself.
- Click Exporteren (Export).
People you shielded in Aldfaer may be left out. After importing, compare the number of people in Stambeam with Aldfaer.
From GensDataPro
In the Bestand (File) menu, choose Exporteren (Export) and then GEDCOM. If you have to pick a version, choose GEDCOM 5.5.1.
From Gramps
Stambeam reads Gramps files directly. That is better than GEDCOM, because nothing from Gramps gets lost.
- In the Family Trees menu, choose Export… (Ctrl+E).
- Choose Gramps XML (.gramps).
- Turn on no filters or privacy options if you want everything.
From Gramps Web
Open the Export page, choose Gramps XML (.gramps) and export. You download photos there separately as a Media ZIP.
If you cannot see every person yourself (limited rights), they are missing from the export too. Let the owner of the tree export it.
From Family Tree Builder (MyHeritage)
Export from the program on your computer; then your photos come along.
- Open the tree and choose File, Export GEDCOM…
- Choose where the file goes. Make a folder of its own, so the photos end up next to it.
- Click Next, leave Include only selected people off and click Finish.
The photos go into a folder next to the .ged file. Keep that folder and the file together.
From MyHeritage (online)
If you also use Family Tree Builder, export from there instead.
- Log in and choose Family tree, Manage trees.
- Click Export to GEDCOM next to your tree.
- Choose whether photos go along and start the export. You get a download link.
The GEDCOM file only holds links to photos, not the photos themselves.
From Ancestry
Only the owner of a tree can export it.
- Log in, open Trees and choose your tree.
- Click the three dots and choose Tree Settings.
- Under Manage your tree, click Export tree and download the file when it is ready.
Photos do not come along. Save the photos you want to keep yourself from the Ancestry media gallery.
From Family Tree Maker
Export the entire file, not just selected people.
- Choose File, Export and then Entire file.
- Choose GEDCOM as the output format.
- Leave Privatize living people off, or names and facts of living people disappear.
- Choose UTF-8 at Character set if you can, click OK and save the file.
With Include Media files the references go along. Put the media folder of your tree next to the .ged file.
From RootsMagic
Choose all people and leave the privacy option off.
- Go to the Files page and choose Export Data, GEDCOM File.
- At People choose the entire database and tick notes, sources and multimedia links.
- Leave Privatize living people off and click OK.
Only the references to photos go along. Put your media folder next to the .ged file.
From Legacy Family Tree
Legacy makes a standard GEDCOM file.
- Choose File, Export to, GEDCOM File.
- At Produce file for, choose standard GEDCOM 5.5.
- Pick your options and click Select File Name and START EXPORT.
From Heredis
Heredis can put your photos in a folder next to the file.
- Choose File, Export, GEDCOM and then Entire file.
- Tick media and choose Create media folder.
- Choose UTF-8 as the character set and Export all persons.
- Click Export and name the file.
The photos go into a folder next to the .ged file.
From Geneanet
Open your tree on Geneanet and look in its menu for export or backup as GEDCOM. Choose the whole tree, not one branch.
From FamilySearch
The shared FamilySearch Family Tree cannot be downloaded whole as GEDCOM. A program that syncs with FamilySearch (such as RootsMagic or Legacy) can fetch your part; you then export from that program.
From Another program
Almost every family tree program can make GEDCOM. Look for Export or Save as and choose GEDCOM. If you can, choose UTF-8 and include living people, sources and notes.
