Moving your tree to Stambeam
Is your tree already in another program? Then you bring it over with a file. Nothing changes until you say so.
Importing a file
Stambeam reads GEDCOM (the exchange format for family trees, files ending in .ged), GEDZIP (the same, with your photos included), Gramps XML and GEDCOM X. Every family tree program can make one of these files.
- 1Start the import
Go to File, Import (GEDCOM, Gramps, GEDCOM X)…. - 2Choose your file
Click Choose file…. Nothing is changed yet. - 3Look at the preview
You see how many people, families, sources and photos are in it, and where something does not fit. - 4Choose what you want
Choose Into a new tree, Merge into the open tree or Analyse only. - 5Import
Click Import. Just before, Stambeam automatically makes a copy of your tree. - 6Check the result
Is it right? Choose Keep. Not what you wanted? Choose Undo and everything is back as it was.
What happens to your data
- Your original file is never touched.
- Data that Stambeam does not know is not lost. You see it in the preview under Unknown data, it is kept, and it comes back unchanged when you export.
- Photos are copied along when they are next to the file (or in the GEDZIP archive).
- After a merge you look for duplicate people with Tools, Duplicates.
Taking your tree with you again
With File, Export GEDCOM… you make a GEDCOM file. You choose the whole tree, the ancestors or descendants of a person, or a group. Under Living people you choose whether they are included fully, with their name only, or left out.
