Setting up a hub
With a hub you work on the same tree on more computers and share it with family. You run the hub yourself, at home or on a server. Stambeam never runs a server for you.
What is a hub?
A hub is a small program that runs on a computer, a NAS or a Raspberry Pi and stores your tree. You install it with Docker. That is somewhat technical. If someone in the family can do that, ask them for help.
Without a hub, Stambeam simply works on your own computer alone.
Installing the hub
The hub comes as a Docker image. The steps are in the hub manual (INSTALLATIE). Two things beforehand:
- A backup outside the device is your own responsibility. The hub makes a daily copy, but it sits on the same disk.
- Encrypt the disk the hub is on.
Linking your tree
- 1Get the installation code
As long as there is no account yet, the hub writes a one-time installation code in its log when it starts. - 2Add the hub
Open your tree and choose Settings, Hub, Add hub. Fill in the address of the hub and confirm it. - 3Make the first account
Choose New hub, fill in the installation code and choose a user name and password (at least 8 characters). This first account is the administrator. - 4Link the tree
Choose Link. Beforehand Stambeam makes a safety copy, then the current state goes to the hub.
On a second computer
Add the same hub there under Settings, Hub and choose Open tree…. Without an open tree you also find it on the start screen under Stambeam Hub….
At the bottom of the window you see whether everything is up to date (Synced), whether changes are waiting and whether the hub can be reached. Click it for details and Sync now. If you work offline, everything goes along as soon as the hub is back.
