Having records read (transcription)
Old handwriting is hard to read. AI can write out a scan of a record for you. The result is an aid to check, never a source.
Transcribing a record
- 1Open the scan
Open the scan in the media viewer. When AI is on, you see the Transcript panel on the right. - 2Start
Click Transcribe. - 3Look at the preview
First you see exactly what will be sent. Nothing leaves until you click Send. - 4Check the draft
Read the text against the scan. Uncertain lines are marked. - 5Save
Click Save as note. The text is marked Made by AI.
Getting data out
With Make proposals the AI picks facts, witnesses and sources out of the text. You decide per proposal whether to take it over. For that, the file must first be linked to a deceased person or an event.
Good to know
- Only images (JPEG, PNG, GIF, WebP) can be transcribed. A PDF cannot yet: save the page as an image first.
- The scan goes to the provider unchanged. Names on the scan therefore cannot be left out.
- For a young record (less than 100 years old) or a file of a living person you get an extra warning. Only send it if you really need to.
